  • Ten years and counting here, fuck if anyone knows at this point. My personal (maybe a bit cynical) take is that it really doesn’t matter as the amount of coding skill you use maxes out in the first few years of your career (for 90% of us anyhow), after that cat herding skills and pragmatic system architecture is what’s important. It becomes more important to know what not to do rather than the opposite.

So it doesn’t really matter how fast you are at leetcode if you can navigate the particular brand of spaghetti your workplace is cooking, plus points if you are able and willing to grok new kinds so you can hop jobs because raises are so last century.

  • More and more people are using docker to run shit

Docker is not made that way so people can get out of fixing shit that breaks constantly. The point is more to get rid of once-in-a-lifetime errors for which a reinstall or restart would be faster for anyway, but the main reason is that you get to sleep because if something fucky happens at 3AM, it’s more likely the system will just right itself.

I certainly wouldn’t call debugging a blinking container easier than just fixing shit on the server. In a container though, I can be sure the issue is fixed and it’s not just another bandaid on a growing pile that is going to explode as soon as the guy building the pile retires.

  • So how is 19th century imperialism different from Roman imperial expansion or Greek colonialism in antiquity for example? Or the various attempts to resurrect the Roman Empire by basically everyone? Why don’t we call Roman emperors or Alexander the Great or even Sigismund imperialists? Honest question here, I’m not a historian or anything.

  • I have a feeling that they made it up after the fact because the whole point of ε and φ there should be that they come with their own formulas that depend on the demand itself, instead of just being set to a constant value. I don’t imagine a straight line is a good enough model for the world economy, especially when fucking around with stuff that can implode it.

But ChatGPT does not know that, and especially won’t expand on that if you ask it “make my formula seem more scientific”.
